Secondary-level educational institutions resumed classes on Saturday (May 4) after a nationwide closure due to heatwaves.

However, schools, colleges, and madrasas will remain closed in 25 districts, including Rajshahi and Dhaka, today due to the persistence of an intense heatwave.

On the other hand, primary schools will resume classes from Sunday (May 5), said Secretary at the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Farid Ahmed.

Schools and colleges were supposed to reopen on April 21 after the long holidays of Eid-ul-Fitr and Pahela Baishakh, but due to the heatwave across the country, it was delayed by a week. When schools and colleges reopened last Sunday, some teachers and students fell ill due to extreme heat, with a few reportedly dying of heatstroke.

When the report in this regard was brought to the attention of the High Court, the bench of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Khizir Hayat issued an order to close all primary and secondary schools, higher secondary schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical institutes until last Thursday.
