More heat waves and rains are likely to sweep across the country throughout the month of May, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Temperatures are, however, anticipated to marginally decrease compared to April, BMD Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque told Bangladesh First on Friday (3 May).
“During the month of May normal rainfall is expected. In some parts of the country, two to three severe and occasionally one to three mild to moderate heatwaves may occur,” he added.
“There is a possibility of rain in Dhaka and its surrounding districts from the 5-6 May, and it may rain across the country from the 6-10 May. After that, the temperature will increase slightly from the 12 May,” the meteorologist further said.
He also said daytime temperatures may surpass seasonal averages in some areas during May.
BMD warns of potential nor'westers over a three to five-day period in May, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across various regions of the country.
Moreover, coastal areas along the Bay of Bengal may experience the formation of one to two light to moderate cyclones, with a depression in the middle of the month.
In the northern and northeastern regions of the country, including Sylhet and the haor areas, the water level of rivers may rise rapidly. In some places, it may exceed the danger level.
The severity of the April heatwave prompted the issuance of multiple heat alerts, with reports indicating widespread incidents of heat-related illnesses, including heat strokes. Such an extreme scenario has not been witnessed in the past 76 years, BMD added.
