Lightning kills 5 people in Rangamati, Cox's Bazar

Five people inlcuding an elderly woman were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Rangamati and Cox's Bazar in the early hours of Thursday.

Fifty-year-old Nazir Ahmed was struck by lightning while he was catching fish with a fishing rod at Kaptai lake around 8:30am. 

He was taken to Rangamati General Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

The hospital’s Residential Medical Officer Shawkat Akber Khan said he was already dead on arrival. 

Meanwhile, two woman -- 60-year old Baharzan from Baradom Muslim Block area and 37-year-old Tonibala from Betling Mouza in Sazek -- under Baghaichari upazila were killed by lightning strike this morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akter told the Bangladesh First. 

Another woman named Tonibala Tripura, 37, was hit by lightning in Longthian area of Betling Mouza in Sajek. 

In Cox's Bazar, two salt cultivators died after being struck by lightning in Pekua upazila. 

Didarul Islam from Kodailya Dia area in Magnama union went to collect salt at dawn sensing rainfall when he was hit by lightning, said the union parishad’s Chairman Chairman Yunus Chowdhury.

He was rushed to Pekua Upazila Health Complex where the doctor on duty declared him dead. 

In a repeat of such an incident, salt cultivator Arafat from Charipara area in Rajakhali union lost his life after being struck by lightning while collecting salt from a land, said local Union Parishad Nazrul Islam Sikder Babul.
