The government has no plans to import sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman.
"We have plans to enable farmers to produce more. We have initiatives to ensure that the price of sacrificial animals is within the purchasing power of people," he said Savar speaking at the orientation programme for the newly recruited officers of the 41st Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) under the fisheries and livestock cadre on Sunday (28 April).
"Our livestock such as cows and goats are suffering from various diseases. Disease prevention poses a major challenge. That is why we have taken initiatives to modernise and activate veterinary hospitals. We have decided to import modern machinery to manage them so that they can serve the people well," he added.
He also said the government has already taken a plan to motivate the farmers to produce more.
"The World Bank has a project. If farmers invest Tk100 in this project, we will give Tk60. Farmers will be allowed to repay with nominal interest over a long period of time. Farmers will surely be interested and encouraged by this," he said.
