At least nine members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) entered Bangladesh through Teknaf in Cox's Bazar amid the ongoing conflict on the other side of the border.

"The group entered through the Kharankhali border of Hoikang in Teknaf for shelter on Sunday (14 April) morning," Border Guard Bangladesh Commander (Teknaf-2) Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed said.

At that time the BGP personnel had weapons with them which have been kept in BGB’s custody.

He said that the BGP personnel entered Bangladesh to escape the ongoing conflict inside their own country.

“They are kept in the custody of BGB,” the official added.

The Myanmar Army and the rebel group Arakan Army have been engaged in combat in the Arakan since early this year.

Several Bangladeshis suffered injuries from mortar shells or bullets coming from the other side of the border.

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has termed the spillover effect unexpected and unacceptable.

Since 3 February, a total of 330 Myanmar forces personnel, including BGP members, army personnel, and immigration officials have taken shelter in Bangladesh, said BGB.

They were sent back on 15 February.
