Sonali Bank’s Ruma branch Manager Nizam Uddin was rescued two days after being abducted by members of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) during a robbery at the bank in Bandarban.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued him around 7:15 pm yesterday from the Ruma Bazar area through negotiations with the KNF group.

Armed KNF members abducted Nizam on Tuesday night and attempted to loot Tk1.59 crore deposited in the bank's vault. After failing to loot money from the vault, they seized 14 firearms and 415 bullets from the police and Ansar members on duty.

Meanwhile, Nizam’s family members breathed a sigh of relief following the news of the banker’s release. Nizam’s wife, Maisuma Islam, told the daily newspaper Prothom Alo that they had spent three anxious days after his abduction.

“God has listened to our prayers and returned an innocent man to us. He has been rescued, whatever the means, and this is the greatest achievement,” said Maisuma, expressing her gratitude to everyone involved in the rescue operation.

Nizam Uddin had been in RAB custody since last night following his release yesterday.
