The Delhi High Court on Thursday rejected a plea seeking the removal of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal from his position as chief minister following his arrest in a case related to money laundering linked to the excise policy.
A bench led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan declined to delve into the merits of the issue, stating that such matters fell beyond the purview of judicial intervention.
"It is the responsibility of other branches of the government to assess in accordance with the law," the bench, which also included Justice Manmeet PS Arora, remarked.
During the proceedings, the court requested counsel for the petitioner, Surjit Singh Yadav, to demonstrate the legal impediment to Kejriwal's continuance as chief minister. "While there may be practical challenges, the existence of a legal barrier remains unclear," the court queried.
Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested on 21 March and subsequently placed under Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody until 28 March by a Delhi court. He faces allegations of direct involvement in a conspiracy related to the formulation of an excise policy favoring specific individuals.
