A man, known as a Jubo League activist accused of firing 28 rounds during an anti-discrimination protest in Chattogram, has been arrested, police say.

The gunman Touhidul Islam, known locally as Hari Touhid or Farid, was detained during a police operation in Satkhira on Friday (22 November). He is known to be a follower of former Chandgaon Ward Councilor Md Esrarul Haque.

He is accused in 12 cases, including five murder cases.

The shooting took place on 4 August during protests in the Chandgaon area of the city.

Touhidul was previously seen wielding a weapon during protests in Chandgaon and Bahaddarhat, but police say they have not been able to confirm his alleged political ties.

"We could not find any political affiliation. He is a professional criminal with multiple cases against him," said Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rois Uddin.

Police say Touhidul has admitted to firing on protesters using a "Pakistani shooter gun." Efforts to recover the weapon and ammunition are ongoing, officials added.

The anti-discrimination movement, which spanned from 17 July to 4 August, saw deadly violence in Chattogram, leaving 10 people dead and over 100 injured.

Families of victims have filed at least 25 cases, some naming top Awami League leaders including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as accused.
