South Africa made a cautious start to their innings, reaching 73 for 3 at the end of 20 overs on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today. The Proteas currently trail by 33 runs after Bangladesh was bowled out for a mere 106 in their first innings, shortly after the lunch break.

Pacer Hasan Mahmud and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam each took one wicket, but South Africa's batting lineup appeared relatively untroubled during the early overs. Following the tea break, Taijul Islam claimed the wicket of David Bedingham.

Hasan Mahmud provided the breakthrough in the first over, rattling the stumps of South Africa's stand-in captain, Aiden Markram, who managed just 6 runs.

Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs then built a 44-run partnership for the second wicket before Taijul broke through by dismissing Stubbs. The latter, who seemed comfortable in his brief stay, was unsettled by a delivery that turned sharply past him. Stubbs managed to hit four boundaries, scoring 23 runs off 27 balls.
