Senior Supreme Court lawyer and chairperson of the human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, ZI Khan Panna, has been granted anticipatory bail in an attempted murder case.

The High Court's dual bench issued the bail order on Monday (21 October), concerning a case filed at Khilgaon police station in the capital.

Earlier, on 17 October, a case was lodged against ZI Khan Panna and 180 others for their alleged involvement in the attempted murder of Ahadul Islam, following an incident on 19 July during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The case was filed by Ahadul's father, Md Baker, 52, at Khilgaon police station.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Ahadul and others were protesting near Meradia Market when unidentified members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and Awami League activists, acting under the orders of other accused persons, opened fire on the crowd.

Ahadul was shot and, after falling to the ground, was allegedly beaten by the assailants at the scene. He was later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
