Judges are set to be appointed to the International Crimes Tribunal this week to initiate the trial of those accused in the genocide related to the anti-discrimination movement, which took place in July and August, according to Chief Prosecutor Advocate Tazul Islam.

In a statement made on Sunday (13 October), while speaking to the media, he disclosed this significant development.

Despite the weekend, tribunal members convened a meeting at their Dhanmondi office. Strict confidentiality is being maintained to ensure that none of the accused can flee the country.

Advocate Tazul Islam further stated that following the appointment of the judges, arrest warrants and travel bans against the accused individuals involved in the July genocide will be sought later this week.

He also mentioned that efforts are underway to seek the assistance of Interpol, with arrest warrants planned for fugitive suspects, including Sheikh Hasina, the President of the Awami League, among others.

It is notable that over 60 allegations, including forced disappearances, murders, and genocide, have already been filed with the tribunal against Sheikh Hasina, leaders of the Awami League and 14-party alliance, as well as former top officials of law enforcement agencies.

Although the investigation team and prosecution staff have been appointed, the appointment of judges had remained pending.

On 10 October, Legal Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul confirmed that the judges would take their seats in the courtroom this week, marking the commencement of the trial process.
