The United States has expressed its desire for those responsible for the recent human rights violations in Bangladesh to be held accountable.

US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller made this statement in response to a question during a routine press briefing on Monday (7 October).

During the briefing, a journalist inquired if the United States had communicated with the Bangladeshi authorities regarding the protection of minorities, given India's growing concern over the safety of the Durga Puja festival, which is scheduled to commence tomorrow.

"Of course, we want to see the rights of minorities protected in Bangladesh," Miller affirmed in his response.

Miller was further questioned about the specific measures the US intends to take in response to an urgent plea from the French-based human rights organisation JMBF, which highlighted the rising incidents of mob violence and lynchings in Bangladesh.

The journalist also asked how the US plans to ensure accountability for these human rights abuses, especially in light of the increasing number of legal cases being filed against innocent individuals.

In reply, Miller referred to a meeting that took place two weeks ago at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

The discussion focused on the protection of human rights in Bangladesh.

"The secretary made it clear that we want to see human rights safeguarded, and that ultimately, those responsible for violations of the rights of the Bangladeshi people over the past few months must be held accountable," Miller stated.
