Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast that the ongoing rainfall across the capital and the rest of the country will begin to subside from this evening; however, another spell of heavy showers is expected in various parts of the country at the beginning of October.

"We issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for the entire country on 24 September, which will remain effective until 6pm today," Meteorologist Md Abdur Rahman told Bangladesh First on Thursday (26 September).

"Additionally, a landslide warning was issued for hilly areas due to the heavy rain. The rainfall pattern will persist until this evening, after which the intensity will gradually decrease. By tomorrow, rainfall will taper off, although some areas in the northern and western regions may still experience showers," he added.

He also said that given that the monsoon season is ongoing, intermittent rainfall may occur in certain areas, but we expect clearer weather from tomorrow onwards.

"The heavy rainfall caused rough seas, prompting us to issue a cautionary signal number three. This warning remains in effect, though conditions at sea are showing signs of improvement. Once the situation stabilises further, we will lift the signal," he added.

When asked about the record rainfall over the past 24 hours, the BMD official stated, "According to our records, from 6am yesterday to 6am today, the highest rainfall was recorded in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, with 104mm, followed by Rajshahi with 101mm. Dhaka recorded 44mm during the same period."

Regarding post-rainfall temperatures, he explained, "As is typical following such rainfall, temperatures will begin to rise. However, they will not return to pre-rainfall levels. Starting tomorrow, we expect an increase in temperature."

When asked about the possibility of further rain, the BMD official further said, "Temperatures will remain slightly elevated for three days following the cessation of rainfall. However, towards the end of this month, or at the beginning of the next, we are expecting another spell of rainfall. The temperature will rise until the 30th, after which heavy to very heavy rainfall in different parts of the country could lead to a drop in temperature, marking the onset of winter."
