Asaduzzaman Miah, the former commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has been sent to jail in connection with the murder of Nuruzzaman Jony, the former general secretary of the Khilgaon Thana unit of Chhatra Dal, while in police custody.
Following the completion of a 7-day remand, Asaduzzaman was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka on Thursday (19 September), where a plea was submitted for his detention in jail.
Additionally, the prosecution sought permission to arrest him in another murder case.
After hearing the submissions, Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman approved the request to show him as arrested in the second case and ordered his imprisonment.
Defence lawyers for Asaduzzaman sought bail, but the court rejected the plea.
Asaduzzaman Miah was apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on the night of 11 September from the Mahakhali flyover area in the capital.
The following day, 12 September, a court had granted a 7-day remand in the case concerning the alleged extrajudicial killing, under the guise of a "crossfire", of Nuruzzaman Jony while he was in police custody.
According to reports, on 20 January 2015, Jony was killed in a so-called "gunfight" while in police custody in the Khilgaon area.
9 years after the incident, Jony’s father, Yakub Ali, filed a case on 2 September this year at Khilgaon Police Station.
The case implicates 13 members of the police force as well as 49 others, including former MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury, all of whom are affiliated with the Awami League.
