A youth, allegedly mentally unstable, was beaten to death by students at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU) on suspicion of theft.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (18 September), Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said.

Commenting on the incident, he said "Such acts cannot be tolerated on campus. Even if someone is caught stealing, no one has the right to beat them to death."

He added that efforts are being made to identify the perpetrators through CCTV footage, and the hall authorities will file a police report on the matter.

The deceased, identified as Tofazzal, hailed from Kathaltali Union in Patharghata, Barguna.

According to sources, Tofazzal was apprehended on Wednesday evening under suspicion of theft and taken to the guest room of the hall by students.

He was subjected to repeated beatings until 10pm. At one point, the youth was even given a meal in the hall’s canteen but was assaulted again afterward.

At approximately 10pm, hall tutors arrived at the scene, and around midnight, a group of students took Tofazzal to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Upon arrival, the attending doctor declared him dead, after which the students left the hospital.

Inspector Md Faruq, in charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said, "After examination, the doctor declared the youth dead. The body has been sent to the morgue."
