The interim government will reform the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Forces (BDDF) into a more efficient, well-structured, professional, and contemporary force, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

"Necessary actions will be undertaken by the Ministry of Home Affairs to achieve these reforms,"  he said during his keynote address at the graduation ceremony for the 40th BCS (Ansar) cadre officers and the 25th batch (male) recruit soldiers' basic training at the Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Academy in Safipur, Gazipur on Wednesday (18 September).

He highlighted the historical and ongoing contributions of the Ansar forces, noting their significant role in maintaining law and order and contributing to the nation’s overall development since the country's independence.

The adviser commended the force for its crucial role in safeguarding important installations and diplomatic areas, particularly following the fall of the autocratic government through the anti-discrimination student movement.

He praised the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Forces' dedication in protecting various establishments, including police stations and airports, often at personal risk.

The Ansar Guard Battalion's contribution to internal security at Dhaka Metropolitan Police stations and its role in securing Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were specifically noted.

He also lauded the Ansar Guard Battalion's bravery in performing its duties at the state guesthouse, Jamuna, despite the police force's shortage under the current government. He expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation to all members of the force for their courageous efforts in the nation's time of need.

Furthermore, he acknowledged the significant role played by the voluntary VDP members across the villages in maintaining peace and security.

He highlighted their commendable efforts in addressing recent social security concerns and their role in countering attempts to incite communal discord by protecting places of worship and fostering harmony among minority communities.

The ceremony was also attended by Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen, senior secretary of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmood, director General of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Forces.

Home adviser received salutes and presented awards to distinguished trainees during the event.
