In a tragic accident in Kaliganj, Gazipur, at least 5 passengers lost their lives when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw collided with a stationary covered van.
The incident occurred near the Mulgaon Madrasa area on the Kaliganj-Tongi-Ghorashal bypass road at around 11pm on Saturday (14 September), Kaliganj Fire Service Officer Mostafizur Rahman said.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Alauddin said “Five individuals, including three men, one woman, and a child, were killed in the collision between the auto-rickshaw and the covered van. Two other injured individuals are receiving treatment in hospital. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident.”
The victims have been identified as Rabeya Begum, 70, wife of Abdur Rahman from Akharashal village in Baghabar Union, Shibpur Upazila, Narsingdi; her son Mohammad Ali, 55; Mohammad Ali’s young son Aman Ullah, 5; Amal Kumar Karmakar, 39, son of Subash Karmakar from Noagaon, Gazipur City Corporation; and Nazmul, 35, son of Mogrob Ali from Hajipur village, Jhaudanga Union, Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
Fire Service detailed the incident, stating, “At around 11pm on Saturday night, a speeding CNG-powered auto-rickshaw collided with a stationary covered van belonging to Pran RFL on the Kaliganj-Tongi-Ghorashal road in Mulgaon. Four bodies, including that of an elderly woman, were recovered from the scene. Locals rushed the critically injured child, Aman Ullah, to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead. The severely injured auto-rickshaw driver received initial treatment before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.”
Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Shahidul Islam stated, “At around 11:30pm a child was brought in deceased. The critically injured auto-rickshaw driver was stabilised and referred to Dhaka for further treatment. One other individual remains hospitalised.”
