Saidpur Airport will be developed into a regional aviation hub with new runway plans, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
"This initiative will enable airlines from Bhutan, Nepal, and India to utilise the airport. As part of this major development, a new runway will be constructed adjacent to the existing one, with land acquisition procedures set to commence shortly," CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Manjur Kabir Bhuiyan said on Thursday (12 September).
Following a site visit to inspect the ongoing development works at the airport, the chairman addressed journalists in the VIP lounge.
He stated, "The youth have provided an opportunity to build the nation. Accordingly, all officials and employees are working diligently to advance the country. The work to transform Syedpur Airport into a regional aviation hub and international gateway, which had stalled, is now resuming."
"The development master plan for the airport has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance. To establish Syedpur Airport as a dynamic airfield, the runway will be expanded. We anticipate challenges in land acquisition, but we will resolve these collectively," he added.
Air Vice Marshal Md Manjur Kabir Bhuiyan also noted that steps are being taken to facilitate cargo flights from Syedpur Airport, with infrastructure development initiatives underway to support this.
Earlier, the CAAB chairman met with officials and staff of Saidpur Airport.
