A landslide in the Jhilonja area of Cox's Bazar Sadar, triggered by continuous rainfall, has resulted in the tragic deaths of a mother and her two daughters.

The incident, which occurred around 3am on Friday (13 September), took place in the Dakshin Dikkul area of Ward 2 in Jhilonja Union, said Union Parishad (UP) member Mizanul Karim Sikder.

The victims have been identified as Akhi Moni, 25, wife of Mizanur Rahman of Dakshin Dikkul, and their two children, Moyna, 5 and Maya, 2.

According to a neighbour, Mohammad Rustam, the landslide occurred at approximately 3am due to incessant rain, burying the family in their sleep.

Local residents, with the assistance of the fire service, managed to recover the bodies.

The family resided at the foot of a hill, making them vulnerable to such incidents.

UP member Mizanul Karim Sikder added that several areas of Cox's Bazar Sadar have been inundated due to the continuous downpour.

Warnings had been issued in anticipation of potential landslides, but the family tragically fell victim to the disaster after failing to evacuate to a safer location.
