The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to investigate former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy on charges of corruption and illicit asset accumulation, said a source from the commission on Thursday (12 September).

According to the source, allegations suggest that following her election as mayor, Dr Selina Hayat Ivy appointed Abul Hossain as her personal assistant.

He is accused of abusing his power to extort millions from CNG and auto-rickshaw drivers through intimidation. He reportedly owns four to five flats in Narayanganj city under his name.

Additionally, Arif Hossain, who was not promoted to the personal assistant position, has been appointed as a school teacher. The chauffeur of Dr Ivy also owns two flats in Narayanganj.

The source further revealed that Dr Ivy's two brothers, Ali Reza Ripon and Ahmad Ali Reza Ujjol, are implicated in embezzling large sums of money annually through the solid waste collection and disposal management project in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.

The brothers are also said to have demolished a historic club to build a market and encroached on 18 acres of Bangladesh Railways land to establish Sheikh Russell Park.

Beyond these assets and allegations, the ACC has found evidence of further illicitly acquired wealth in the names of Dr Ivy, her associates, and close relatives.

Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, daughter of Ali Ahmed Chunka, Narayanganj's first municipal chairman, was first elected as Mayor in 2011 and has since been re-elected for a third consecutive term.

Her father was a notable freedom fighter, Narayanganj municipal chairman, and president of the district Awami League.
