Following the completion of a seven-day remand, a Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shahidul Haque.
The directive was issued on Wednesday (11 September), when Shahidul Haque was produced in court after the remand.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Baizid Bostami of New Market Police Station, requested that Shahidul Haque be detained in jail. In response,
Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider of Dhaka granted the request, issuing the order for his imprisonment.
On 4 September, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Akhtaruzzaman approved a seven-day remand for Shahidul Haque in connection with the murder case of businessman Wadud in the New Market area.
At the time, the police had initially sought a 10-day remand to ensure a thorough investigation.
Shahidul Haque was arrested on 3 September, from Sector 16 in Uttara, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s media and public relations department.
On 5 August, following a student-led public uprising, the Awami League government was overthrown. Shahidul Haque had been appointed as the IGP on 30 December 2014 during that administration, and he retired from the position on 31 January 2018.
