Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has written to Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus seeking payment of outstanding dues for electricity sold to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), reported the Hindustan Times on Tuesday (10 September).

The report states that the Indian businessman has urged the BPDB to settle a debt of $800 million.

In his letter, Adani emphasised the fulfilment of commitments made to Bangladesh while pointing out the increasing pressure from creditors on his company.

"We are honouring our commitments to Bangladesh, but our creditors are being strict with us. I kindly request your intervention to ensure the swift payment of the $800 million owed to us by the Bangladesh Power Development Board," wrote Gautam Adani.

He further requested regular payments for electricity sold to Bangladesh to prevent future delays.

It has been revealed that Adani Power is owed $800 million for eight to nine months of electricity supply to BPDB.

Since June, Adani Power has been supplying electricity to Bangladesh through a dedicated transmission corridor from its 1.6-gigawatt coal-fired power plant in Jharkhand, India.

Adani noted that his company has invested $2 billion to construct a state-of-the-art power plant and the associated transmission infrastructure.

"I reaffirm our commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s energy security and infrastructure development," he added.
