Just days ago, the entire Test match between New Zealand and Afghanistan was called off at the Greater Noida stadium, located near Delhi, due to a poor outfield.
It seems the same issue has now plagued the Kanpur Test. The last bout of rain occurred yesterday evening, and while the sky remained overcast this morning, there has at least been no further rain. As a result, hopes were high that the match might resume.
However, the inadequate drainage system dashed those hopes. This morning, all covers were removed early, and ground staff worked tirelessly throughout the day. Yet, despite their best efforts, the field remained unplayable.
After an inspection at 10am, the umpires declared the ground unfit for play. They announced another inspection at noon. Unfortunately, even after two hours, the situation had not improved, leading the umpires to schedule yet another inspection.
By 2pm local time, the final inspection was conducted, and the umpires ultimately decided that no play would take place today.
With the third day also abandoned, the likelihood of the second Test between India and Bangladesh ending in a draw has increased significantly. However, if play resumes tomorrow, the situation could still change—who knows what might unfold!
