BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called for the swift implementation of essential state reforms to pave the way for a democratic transition through an election acceptable to all.
Addressing an extended meeting of her party virtually from London on Thursday (27 February), Khaleda Zia stated that Bangladesh is going through a critical period.
She credited the combined movement of party activists and students for the removal of the fascist regime and acknowledged the formation of an interim government.
She emphasised that public expectations from the current administration hinge on executing fundamental state repairs and facilitating a widely accepted election to restore democracy.
Paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the protracted struggle against autocracy, she particularly honoured the martyrs of the brutal repression witnessed in July and August, which she described as acts of genocide.
She also expressed deep sympathy for the injured. Despite her ongoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom, she reassured her party members that she remains firmly with them in spirit.
Addressing party activists, Khaleda Zia acknowledged their unwavering fight for democracy and her own release over the past 15 years.
She lauded their sacrifices, noting that many leaders and activists have lost their lives, faced enforced disappearances, endured persecution, and continue to battle legal harassment, with over 1.25 lakh cases still pending against them.
She affirmed that their sacrifices for democracy would be eternally remembered, not just by the party but by the entire nation.
