On 23 September 2018, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched "Modicare," officially known as the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).

The scheme, heralded as the world's largest healthcare program, aims to provide free health coverage to over 500 million low-income individuals.

Modicare offers insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh (approximately $7,000) per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

This monumental initiative seeks to alleviate the financial burden on families who often fall into poverty due to medical expenses, aiming to transform the healthcare landscape in India by ensuring access to quality medical care for the most vulnerable.
