Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely to sweep across the country as the monsoon depression that formed in the Bay of Bengal has now moved inland as a land depression and is likely to gradually weaken, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

"Monsoon depression in the Bay of Bengal advanced northwestward, crossing the northern Andhra-Southern Odisha coast. On Sunday (1 September) it was located over southern Odisha and its nearby areas as a land depression. It is expected to move further northwest and gradually weaken," BMD said in its latest weather bulletin on Monday (2 September).

"Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, may occur in many places across the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and in some areas of the Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal divisions," it added.

Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in some parts of the country, BMD further said.

Moreover, the extended part of the monsoon axis is stretching across India's Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, the centre of the land depression, Gangetic West Bengal and up to Assam.

The monsoon is moderately active over Bangladesh and is in a medium state over the northern Bay of Bengal.

BMD has also reported that this trend of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall may persist across all divisions throughout the week.

Due to the stormy weather, temperatures across the country may drop slightly over the next few days.
