The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is positively inclined towards sanctioning $3 billion in budget support to Bangladesh, said Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
"The IMF sought clarification on whether the interim government plans to implement the reform conditions attached to the $4.7 billion loans," he said speaking to journalists at the secretariat on Sunday (1 September)
He reassured them that reform implementation has already commenced and promised that there would be no failure in this regard.
The adviser also indicated that the IMF has been informed of Bangladesh's interest in securing an additional $3 billion in budget support, and the response has been favourable.
He plans to discuss this further with the IMF Managing Director during the board meeting in Washington in October.
The finance adviser revealed that the IMF review mission is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in September.
Dr Salehuddin Ahmed also addressed the status of the Rooppur nuclear power plant project, affirming its continuation.
"Bangladesh has requested a two-year extension before commencing loan repayments to Russia, and the Russian ambassador to Bangladesh has responded positively to this request," he added.
He mentioned that the Russian ambassador had expressed concerns regarding the continuation of the Rooppur project and loan repayments, but the interim government assured him that loan instalments would be paid regularly.
