Doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have ceased providing medical services following an incident of assault and vandalism in the hospital's emergency department.
Protesting doctors suspended emergency medical services citing concerns over their safety on Sunday (1 September).
The incident that led to this decision occurred on Saturday (31 August) when three neurosurgeons were assaulted.
The doctors demanded the identification and arrest of the culprits, giving an ultimatum after reviewing CCTV footage. They announced that they would go on strike if the perpetrators were not apprehended within 24 hours.
Late that night, individuals injured in a clash between two groups in the Khilgaon Sepahibagh area arrived at Dhaka Medical College for treatment.
Shortly afterward, another group armed with machetes entered the emergency department. The authorities apprehended four individuals on the spot and handed them over to the army.
Later, following the death of another patient, the deceased's relatives vandalised the hospital's nonstop emergency centre.
In light of these security concerns, the doctors suspended emergency department operations, proceeding with their strike before the 24-hour ultimatum expired.
