A Dhaka court has granted a 6-day remand for Rashed Khan Menon, President of the Workers Party of Bangladesh and former minister, in connection with the murder case of garment worker Rubel under Adabor Police Station.

He was granted fresh remand after police presented him in the court today following the end of a 5-day remand in the New Market Police Station’s Wadud murder case.

Earlier, the court had granted a 7-day remand for Abdus Sobhan Golap, Awami League’s Secretary for Publicity and Publication, and a 5-day remand for Shakil Ahmed, former Chief of News at Ekattor Television, and his wife, Farzana Rupa, former Chief Reporter of the same channel.

According to the case, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 5 August, Rubel and hundreds of students and civilians organised a protest march around 11am in the Ring Road area under Adabor Police Station. At that time, leaders and activists of the police, Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League, and Matsyajibi League opened fire, injuring Rubel.

Rubel was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following the incident, Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case at Adabor Police Station on 22 August.

The case names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the primary accused. Other accused include Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, actor Ferdous, and Barrister Sayedul Haque Suman.
