The interim government will fully cooperate with the United Nations' investigation into rights violations, said the Home Affairs and Agriculture Adviser Lt General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
"Ministry of Home Affairs will extend comprehensive support to the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission, which has been established to conduct an independent, thorough, impartial investigation into the crimes and human rights violations that occurred during the student movement between 5 June to 5 August," he said during a briefing with journalists following a meeting with a three-member delegation from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in his office at the secretariat on Tuesday (27 August).
The delegation, led by Rory Mungoven, chief of the Asia-Pacific region at OHCHR, also included human rights officers Livia Cosenza and Alexander James Amir El Jundi.
During the briefing, the adviser emphasised the significant contribution of Bangladesh's military and law enforcement personnel to UN peacekeeping missions.
He requested the UN delegation's continued support to maintain Bangladesh's leading position in this regard.
The delegation commended the work of Bangladeshis in UN peacekeeping missions and assured their cooperation.
The home affairs adviser further disclosed that earlier in the day, he had met with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at the Ministry of Agriculture.
During this meeting, the Chinese envoy sought assistance concerning the security of approximately 9,000 Chinese nationals working in Bangladesh.
The adviser assured the Ambassador of the necessary support and also requested China's assistance in aiding those affected by the recent floods.
In the earlier meeting with the OHCHR delegation, Rory Mungoven requested the adviser's cooperation in ensuring that the various law enforcement agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs collect and preserve accurate evidence and relevant data concerning the crimes and human rights violations that occurred during the anti-discrimination student movement.
