The process to lift the government’s ban on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been completed, according to Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Md Monir.
He disclosed that he had been in communication with the Ministry of Home Affairs, which confirmed the completion of the entire process.
Shishir Md Monir shared this information during a press conference at the Supreme Court on Monday (26 August).
He further stated, "Today is a public holiday; therefore, we anticipate that the order withdrawing the ban will be issued tomorrow, Tuesday."
Advocate Shishir Monir expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind the original ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, speculating that it may have been politically motivated. "We believe the party was banned due to its role as an allied force against the fascist government, which faced a popular uprising from students and the general populace. Additionally, Jamaat-e-Islami played a crucial role in the formation of Dr Yunus’s interim government."
He also noted that following the withdrawal of the ban, efforts would be made to revive the party’s case in the Appellate Division to restore its registration.
On 5 August, following a dramatic shift in the political landscape, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami resumed its activities after 15 years, with the party reopening its office on that same day.
However, since then, the party has focused more on social activities rather than political programmes.
In the wake of the 5 August developments, Jamaat has held meetings with the president, chief adviser, and the army chief, despite remaining officially banned on paper.
