The High Court of Bangladesh is set to hear a petition on Thursday (22 August), seeking the proscription of the Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and the cancellation of its registration, citing the party’s alleged involvement in indiscriminate killings of students and civilians.
The decision to schedule the hearing was made by an HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Md Mahbubul Ul Islam on Tuesday (20 August).
The petition, filed by Advocate Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, includes several significant demands. In addition to the call for banning the Awami League, the petition requests that all institutions bearingx the name of former Sheikh Hasina be renamed.
Moreover, the petition advocates for a minimum three-year term for the current interim government, aimed at instituting necessary reforms in the country.
It also calls for the repatriation of an estimated Tk11 lakh crore allegedly siphoned abroad during the Awami League regime and seeks the transfer of officials appointed on a contractual basis during that period.
Advocate Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, representing himself in court, emphasised that the petition seeks the issuance of rulings and orders on these critical issues.
