Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association's report reveals a devastating toll of 372 fatalities from 336 road accidents nationwide in July, alongside significant casualties in rail and waterway incidents

A total of 372 individuals lost their lives in 336 road accidents across Bangladesh in July, according to a report published by the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association on Thursday (15 August).

The association's report, signed by Secretary-General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, detailed that in addition to the road fatalities, 543 people were injured.

The report further highlighted 22 railway accidents resulting in 24 fatalities and four injuries. Meanwhile, 16 accidents on waterways led to 20 deaths, 14 injuries, and 17 people reported missing.

In total, there were 374 accidents across road, rail, and waterways, which resulted in 416 fatalities and 561 injuries.

Of these, 109 motorbike accidents claimed 121 lives and injured 81 others. These figures represent 32.44% of total accidents, 32.52% of fatalities, and 14.91% of injuries.

The highest number of road accidents occurred in the Dhaka Division, with 87 incidents resulting in 92 deaths and 133 injuries, while the Mymensingh Division recorded the fewest, with 14 accidents causing 16 deaths and 13 injuries.

The data, collected by the Accident Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association, was compiled from widely circulated and reputable national, regional, and online newspapers.

Analysing the types of accidents, the report reveals that 36.60% occurred on national highways, 26.48% on regional highways, and 30.95% on feeder roads. Additionally, 5.05% of total accidents took place within Dhaka Metropolitan area, with 0.89% occurring in Chattogram Metropolitan area.
