BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is set to assume the role of Chief Adviser of the interim government, was nominated by their party and the student movement.

"Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the nominee of the students and us. We have entrusted him with this responsibility on behalf of the entire nation. We are confident that under his capable and successful leadership, the current crisis will be resolved," Fakhrul said while speaking to journalists on Thursday (8 August) after Dr Yunus returned to the country.

Fakhrul said the root cause of the problems in the country is the lack of democracy, and restoring democracy is one of Dr. Yunus's primary tasks. "The faster he can restore democracy, the more successful he will be," Fakhrul added.

Outlining the expectations from the interim government, Fakhrul said the first priority should be to establish law and order, taking decisive measures to that end. The second priority is to return to a democratic government through swift elections. The third priority is to take all necessary steps to keep the economy functional.
