The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken five people into custody, including Nusrat Tabassum, a prominent coordinator of the quota reform movement, and former BRAC University lecturer Asif Mahtab.
"Nusrat, Asif, and three others have been taken into custody for security reasons," said Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Mohammad Harun or Rashid during a press briefing held at the DB HQ in Minto Road on Sunday (28 July).
He advised their families not to worry.
Nusrat is a postgraduate student in the Department of Political Science at Dhaka University and a resident of Shamsunnahar Hall.
Sources said she was picked up from her relative's house in Rupnagar, Mirpur, early Sunday morning by individuals identifying themselves as DB officials.
Asif, a former lecturer at BRAC University, was taken from his Uttara residence around 1am on Saturday.
On Saturday evening, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police detained two other coordinators of the quota reform movement - Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah.
Previously, on Friday afternoon, three coordinators - Naheed Islam, Asif Mahmud, and Abu Baker - were taken from Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital.
