The proposed budget allocation for the education sector in FY24-25 has increased both in terms of GDP and compared to the current fiscal year.

The government has allocated Tk94,710 crore to education, representing 11.88% of the total proposed budget of Tk7,97,000 crore.

This allocation is 7.42 % higher than the current fiscal's allocation of Tk88,162 crore, which was 11.57% of the total budget.

The proposed education budget is 1.69% of GDP, down from 1.76% of the current fiscal year.

Educationists have long been recommending the government to increase the education budget to at least 20% of the budget.

This is still below the 6% of GDP that Bangladesh committed to spending on education at the UNESCO World Education Forum in Dakar in 2000.

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali placed a Tk7,96,900 crore budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 at the Parliament on Thursday (6 June).

The proposed budget is 4.6% larger than the current one and much lower than the year-on-year average increase of 11% seen in the last 5 years.
