Eighteen wards under the two city corporations of Dhaka are at high risk of dengue, according to a survey by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Additionally, Aedes larvae have been found in 15% of the residences in the city, said the health directorate while presenting the Pre-Monsoon Aedes Survey-2024 in Mohakhali, Dhaka, on Tuesday (May 28).

It says the risk of dengue has increased with the onset of the rainy season, with the density of Aedes larvae found higher than usual in 18 wards of the two city corporations.

The wards at high risk in Dhaka North City Corporation are 12, 13, 20, 31, 32, 33, 17, and 36. In Dhaka South City Corporation, the at-risk wards are 4, 13, 52, 54, 16, 3, 5, 15, 17, and 23.

In the North City Corporation, ward 12 is at the highest risk where the Breteau index, a parameter to measure the density of Aedes larvae, stands at 43.33%, followed by ward 13 and ward 14 with 40% larvae density.

In the South City Corporation, ward 13, with a 73.33% density, is found to be at the highest risk, followed by wards 4, 52, and 54.

DGHS conducted the survey between April 17-26 on 3,152 houses in the city. Of these households, Aedes larvae and pupae were found in 463 residences.
