Ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, the Ministry of Commerce has granted permission to 49 companies to export Hilsa to India under eight specified conditions.
Initially, the government had planned to export a total of 3,000 tonnes of Hilsa.
However, this decision has been revised, and now 2,420 tonnes of Hilsa will be sent to India.
On Wednesday (25 September), the Ministry of Commerce communicated the revised decision in a letter addressed to the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports.
According to ministry sources, the earlier plan to export 3,000 tonnes was altered due to rising prices in the domestic market following the announcement of the export.
The revised quota allows 49 companies to export Hilsa, with 48 companies permitted to export 50 tonnes each, amounting to 2,400 tonnes collectively. The remaining 20 tonnes will be exported by a single company.
The deadline for submitting applications for export permission was midday on Monday.
Both new and existing applications, along with the required documentation, were thoroughly reviewed before final approval was granted. The export permission is subject to eight conditions, with validity until 12 October.
The conditions are consistent with those applied to Hilsa exports in previous years. These include compliance with the existing export policies, mandatory physical inspections of the fish by customs authorities, and submission of all export-related documents to the Ministry of Commerce after each consignment has been completed.
