The United States has announced nearly $200 million in aid for the Rohingya refugees during a meeting on the Rohingya crisis held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Azra Zeya made the announcement on Wednesday (25 September).
According to a statement released by the US Department of State, the aid includes $129 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and $70 million from the US Department of State.
The statement detailed that the new financial assistance for the region would include $70 million channelled through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.
Meanwhile, USAID's contribution of $129 million includes $78 million from the Commodity Credit Corporation.
Funds from the Commodity Credit Corporation will be used to purchase food from American farmers, which will then be distributed to Rohingya refugees and the local communities in Bangladesh.
Since 2017, US assistance to the region for the Rohingya has exceeded $2.5 billion, with more than $2.1 billion allocated to Bangladesh alone.
