Member of Parliament for Sunamganj-3 constituency and former planning minister, MA Mannan, has been sent to jail by a court.

Judge Farhan Sadiq of the Sunamganj Judicial Magistrate’s Court gave the order following a hearing on Friday (20 September).

Security around the court was heightened from the morning, and MA Mannan was brought in wearing a helmet. His legal counsel requested that, considering his age and physical condition, Mannan be transferred to a hospital. A heated debate ensued between the defence and prosecution lawyers at this point. Subsequently, the court ordered that the case be forwarded to the relevant speedy trial court for a future hearing and that Mannan be sent to prison.

Prosecuting lawyer Masuk Alam stated that MA Mannan was charged in the speedy trial tribunal for allegedly ordering the brutal attack on students and civilians in Sunamganj on 4 August. Following his arrest, he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate’s Court, where the defence sought his hospitalisation.

However, the Judicial Magistrate decided to send the accused to jail, leaving the matter for further hearing in the relevant court.

On 2 September, Hafiz Ahmed, a resident of Doarabazar Upazila, filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act at Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station, accusing MA Mannan and 98 others of being involved in the 4 August attacks on students and protesters during the movement in Sunamganj. The plaintiff’s brother, Jahur Ahmed, a student, was shot and injured during the violent clashes.
