The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has frozen the bank accounts of Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim and ordered the suspension of transactions from accounts belonging to six of his family members and affiliated institutions.

A senior official of the BFIU informed the media on Wednesday that the freeze includes both personal and business accounts. “All transactions through these accounts will be suspended for the next 30 days. The suspension period may be extended if necessary,” stated the official letter from the BFIU.

The letter listed the names and National Identification details of Obaidul Karim, his wife Arjuda Karim, his son Salman Obaidul Karim, Mehedi Hasan, and his daughter Zarin Karim. Additionally, Rezaul Karim’s name and details were also included.

The BFIU directive further mentioned that if any account is frozen, the relevant banks and financial institutions must provide associated documents, such as account opening forms, KYC (Know Your Customer) details, and transaction statements, to the BFIU within two working days from the issuance of the letter.

Since the fall of the government on August 5, the BFIU has taken similar actions against various individuals, including ministers, MPs, politicians, and former bureaucrats. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is also implementing related measures.
