A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former minister for public administration, Farhad Hossain in the murder case of Rubel, a garment worker from the Adabor Police Station area in the capital.

Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah issued the remand order following a hearing on Sunday (15 September).

Prior to this, the investigation officer of the case, Inspector Abdul Malek from Adabor Police Station, had requested a seven-day remand for the accused.

The prosecution argued in favour of the remand request, while the defence counsel for Farhad Hossain sought bail and appealed for the remand to be cancelled. However, after deliberations, the court granted the five-day remand.

Earlier, on Saturday (14 September), Farhad Hossain was arrested from the Eskaton area of the capital in connection with the case.

The case statement details that during an anti-discrimination student protest on 5 August, Rubel, along with several hundred students and civilians, joined a protest march in the Ring Road area of Adabor Police Station around 11am. At that time, members of the police, along with leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League, and Matsyajibi League, opened fire on the protesters. Rubel was shot and later taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

On 22 August, Rubel's father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the murder case with Adabor Police Station.

In this case, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been named as the primary accused.

Other accused individuals include Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, actor Ferdous, and Barrister Syedul Haque Sumon.
