Academic activities at five government primary schools along the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban have resumed 23 days after the institutions were declared closed amid intensifying clashes between the Myanmar military and the rebel group known as Arakan Army.
The local administration has decided to reopen the schools as the situation in Myanmar along the Ghumdhum border has become normal, Naikhongchari Upazila Primary Education Officer Triratan Chakma told Bangladesh First.
Earlier, on 5 February, the schools were declared closed as clashes between Myanmar security forces and rebels intensified in areas adjacent to Bandarban's Ghumdhum union.
The schools are Bainshpari Government Primary School, Bhajabaniya Government Primary School, Tumbru Government Primary School, Paschimkul Tumbru Government Primary School, and Dakshin Ghumdhum Government Primary School.
Although classes have resumed at the schools, the attendance of students was comparatively low on the first day after a long closure.
