Seven students of the University of Dhaka have been suspended for tarnishing the image of the university through anti-discipline activities.

The action was taken following the recommendation of the Disciplinary Council of the university during a Syndicate meeting chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Maqsud Kamal last Monday.

The Public Relations Department of the university disclosed this information today (5 March).

The suspended students are Zahid Sheikh and Md Shahrin Islam from the Department of Ceramic, Azha Islam from the Applied Mathematics Department, Mortuza Hasan Khan from the Music Department, Md Azim Mahmud Tausif from the History Department, Riyad Mal from the International Relations Department, and Abdul Ohed from the Persian Language and Literature Department.

Additionally, 60 students have received punishment for various periods due to malpractice in examinations.

Zahid Sheikh and Md Shahreen Islam were suspended for the alleged snatching of Tk10,000 and demanding a ransom of Tk20 lakh from a student of the Islamic History and Culture Department of Shaheed Suhrawardy College, after confining him in Sir AF Rahman Hall of Dhaka University. The victim’s father filed a case at Lalbagh police station on behalf of the accused students. The university administration decided to suspend them after a preliminary investigation found evidence supporting the complaint.

Azha Islam, Mortuza Hasan Khan, Md Azim Mahmud Tausif, and Riyad Mall were suspended following allegations of beating and robbing two visitors, which were proven in the preliminary investigation.

Abdul Ohed has been suspended for tarnishing the image of the university through misconduct.

The seven students have been asked to show causes within seven working days as to why they should not be expelled from the university for their offense.

Furthermore, as the complaint of extorting the makeshift shops on the campus has been proven, Shamim Hossain, employed at the proctor’s office, has been permanently dismissed from service.

Among the 60 students suspended for various periods due to malpractice in the examination, two students were suspended for three semesters, 40 students were suspended for two semesters, and 18 students were suspended for one semester.
