The supply of gas falls short by 1,000 million cubic feet (MMcf) of the daily demand, which stands at around 4,000 MMcf, State Minister for Energy Nasrul Hamid told the Parliament today (25 February).

"We produce 2,050 MMcf of gas in the country daily, and approximately 800-900 MMcf of imported LNG gas is supplied to the national grid each day," said the state minister in response to a query from lawmaker M Abdul Latif in Parliament.

Nasrul Hamid said the government is implementing various measures to address the existing shortage and meet future demand.

He said an initiative has been launched to dig 48 wells by 2025, which will help supply an additional 618 MMcf of gas to the national grid once implemented.

Out of the 48 wells, the digging and workover at 10 wells have already been completed, ensuring an additional production of 118 MMcf of gas and supplying 33 MMcf of gas to the national grid, the state minister added.

He further mentioned that the capacity of one of the two floating LNG terminals has been increased to 100 MMcf per day, thereby raising the total LNG supply capacity to 1,100 MMcf per day, said Nasrul Hamid.
