Bangladesh is in a good position in terms of project implementation and loan repayment amid the crisis in the global economy, World Bank Managing Director (Operations) Anna Bjerde said.

“There was a discussion on how the World Bank can help in reducing inflation. Moreover, social security and, the development of the SME sector were also discussed,” she told journalists following a meeting with Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali at the capital’s Agargaon on Sunday (25 February).

The World Bank official is on her maiden visit to Dhaka for a day.

After the meeting with the finance minister, she will hold meeting with Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder, representatives of civil society, and private sector leaders.

She will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladesh office of the World Bank said.

The World Bank was one of the first development partners to assist Bangladesh after independence.

After the independence of the country, the World Bank has given more than $41 billion in assistance to Bangladesh.

Most of these loans are grants or concessional loans.

Bangladesh currently has the World Bank Group's largest International Development Association (IDA)-supported programme.
