Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak said strict action will be taken against anyone who is found to be involved in making the market unstable during Ramadan.

“I am using a warning to those who create instability in the market by hiking prices and for people to buy goods at higher prices. No one will be spared,” the minister said while speaking at the opening ceremony of a month-long sale programme of daily essentials at low prices in front of Shyamoli field on Sunday ( 10 March).

“No one will be able to get away challenging the party,” added Nanak, who is also a presidium member of the ruling Awami League.

“I learned about the market when I was the Minister of Local Government and Cooperatives. I have an idea about the market. When we buy a cauliflower from a farmer for Tk10 from Cumilla, it becomes Tk50 when it comes to New Market or Town Hall Market via Karwan Bazaar. Farmers got Tk10 but the cauliflower was sold for Tk50. There is a loophole in the middle, the huge gap is surprising,” he added.

Nanak said, “People have kept us in power for a long time. The prime minister has repeatedly warned about charging higher prices.”

"We have to work hard to control the market for the people. We are for the people, the people are for us," Nanak said.

“Prices decrease in different Muslim countries during the month of Ramadan. But in our country the prices are increased by some dishonest businessmen,” he added.

In response to BNP leader General Mirza Abbas' statement that the party’s movement will continue until the government is ousted, the AL leader said, "They [BNP] have become a laughing stock to the general public.”

Commenting that the BNP should understand the reality, he further said that the people of Bangladesh will not engage in any destructive activities.

“The people will not go against the people. People are with Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
