Small-scale fishers organised a rally in Bhola on Thursday to commemorate World Fisherpeople’s Day. The event, held under the theme “Our Land, Our Waters, Our Lives”, highlighted the struggles and contributions of traditional and artisanal fishing communities in protecting the coasts, rivers, and oceans. Fishers emphasized that this day symbolizes their vital role in safeguarding nature, providing affordable nutrition, and preserving the cultural heritage of coastal and riverine communities.

The day, first celebrated in 1997 following the establishment of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP) in New Delhi, has grown to be recognized by over 100 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations. It honors the invaluable work of fishers in sustaining biodiversity, food security, and vibrant cultural traditions. Participants called for solidarity, urging everyone to raise the “blue flag” as a symbol of unity and respect for the environment and fisher communities.

In their call to action, the fishers highlighted pressing issues such as resource depletion, pollution, displacement, and the effects of climate change. They demanded an end to destructive fishing practices, pollution from industrial waste and plastics, and the forced relocation of fisherfolk due to coastal development. They also advocated for adaptive measures to support communities impacted by climate change and sought stronger protections for marine and freshwater ecosystems.

The rally encouraged global recognition of fisher contributions by hosting storytelling sessions, film screenings, and awareness programs to shed light on the resilience and challenges faced by fishing communities. Fishers also expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, connecting their struggles for justice and dignity with global fights for water and freedom.

Sanat Kumar Bhowmik, Deputy Executive Director, called for collective action, urging everyone to protect rivers, seas, and coasts and honor the immeasurable contributions of fisherfolk to the environment and society.
