The High Court has upheld the 14-year sentence of the sacked Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman in the case of amassing wealth illegally and money laundering.
The High Court bench of Justice Kamrul Hasan Mollar passed the judgment today (28 February).
Earlier, on 21 June last year, Dhaka's Sixth Special Judge Court Judge Manjurul Imam sentenced Mizanur Rahman to 14 years in prison.
Along with him, Mizan’s brother Mahbubur Rahman, nephew Mahmudul Hasan, and wife Sohelia Anar Ratna were sentenced to seven years imprisonment each.
On 24 June 2019, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against DIG Mizan, his wife Sohelia Annar Ratna, and brother-in-law Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan at Dhaka's integrated district office for embezzling Tk3.28 crore.
After the investigation, the ACC filed a charge sheet against them on 30 January 2020.
DIG Mizanur Rahman, who is in jail in a corruption case, was dismissed from his job on 3 November last year.
On 20 October the same year, the court framed charges against Mizan and three others in the case.
On the other hand, Mizan was sentenced to another three years in prison on 23 February last year for allegedly giving bribes to an ACC official of Tk40 lakh.
