The Appellate Division has upheld the High Court’s order granting bail to Ghulam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim, who was sentenced to life in an arms case.
A five-member appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Thursday (22 February).
The court also directed the High Court bench led by Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder to settle the case within 2 months.
During today’s hearing, the Appellate Division observed that policies should be made regarding those who carry weapons and gunmen personally.
Earlier on 13 December, the High Court granted 6 months bail to GK Shamim, which was stayed by a chamber judge on 19 December.
On 25 September 2022, Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 Judge Sheikh Chamidul Islam sentenced SM Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim and his seven bodyguards to life imprisonment in an arms case.
The Rapid Action Battalion raided Shamim's business in Niketan, Gulshan on 20 September 2019 during the crackdown against casino business across the city. The elite force detained Shamim and his 7 bodyguards and recovered around Tk2 crores in cash, Tk200 crores of FDR, firearms and liquor during the drive.
The next day on 21 September, RAB filed three cases with Gulshan police station accusing all of them in arms and currency smuggling cases while Shamim was sued in a narcotics case too.
After one month of the case, on 26 October 2019, investigating officer RAB-1 SI Shekhar Chandra Mallik filed a charge sheet against Shamim and his bodyguards in the arms case.
